GESIS: Mehrebenenanalyse mit HLM (11.-13.09.2013)

Die Mehrebenenanalyse ist ein Verfahren zur simultanen Analyse von hierarchisch strukturierten Daten, wie sie etwa in der Organisationsforschung oder bei international vergleichenden Untersuchungen vorliegen.

Sind mehrere Untersuchungsteilnehmer gleichwirkenden Kontexteinflüssen ausgesetzt, wie dies bei den Schülern verschiedener Schulklassen oder den Befragten eines Landes innerhalb einer international vergleichenden Studie der Fall ist, dann sind die Voraussetzungen für die Anwendung der herkömmlichen Regressionsanalyse in aller Regel nicht mehr erfüllt.

Unter solchen Bedingungen ist es angeraten, die Analysen mit Hilfe eines Mehrebenenprogrammes durchzuführen.

Der Workshop bietet eine Einführung in die Logik der Mehrebenenanalyse, das Schätzen von Mehrebenenmodellen und die Interpretation der Ergebnisse. Neben metrischen sollen auch dichotome abhängige Variablen eine Berücksichtigung finden.

Lernziele

Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer werden durch die Teilnahme an der Veranstaltung lernen, was die wesentlichen Unterschiede zwischen der traditionellen OLS-Regression und der Mehrebenenregression ist. Sie werden in der Lage sein, Mehrebenenmodelle eigenständig in HLM zu spezifizieren und zu schätzen. Sie können Haupteffekte und Interaktionseffekte (Cross-Level-Interaktionen) richtig interpretieren, die erklärte Varianz berechnen, verschiedene Mehrebenenmodelle anhand verschiedener Fit-Maße vergleichen und standardisierte Regressionskoeffizienten berechnen. Schließlich werden sie auch Grundkenntinisse im Schätzen von logistischen Mehrebenenmodellen erwerben.

Voraussetzungen

Für die Teilnahme am Workshop werden Grundkenntnisse der Regressionsanalyse vorausgesetzt.

Daneben können im Workshop erste Einblicke in die Forschungspraxis gewonnen werden, hierzu wird auch über nützliche Ressourcen informiert, die den Forschungsalltag erleichtern helfen. Der Workshop hat darüber hinaus das Ziel, für die spezifischen Herausforderungen zu sensibilisieren, die eine qualitative Forschungspraxis mit sich bringen kann..

“Reconceptualizing Sustainable Development on the Basis of the Capability Approach – A Model and Its Difficulties” (“Nachhaltigkeit, Gerechtigkeit und Entwicklung – ein Konzept auf der Grundlage des Capability Ansatzes“)

This article sketches a re-conceptualization of sustainable development (SD) on the basis of Sen’s capability approach (CA). The notion of sustainable development was developed as a compromise in a political process and has been reinterpreted (some say diluted) again and again over the last 20 years. When modelling the notion through the lenses of the capability approach, difficulties occur that are at the core of SD and of CA or that are due to their combination. This article shows why it is not easy to replace ‘needs’ in the Brundtland definition of SD with ‘capabilities’. In our model, the differences between systemic and individual levels become clear and herewith the necessity to include both when dealing with issues of SD. The most salient difficulties relate to the multidimensionality and dynamics on both levels. Confronted with these difficulties, demanding individuals to consciously choose sustainable actions seems to be heroic. We propose two ways to alleviate the cognitive and moral burden on individuals by concentrating on the natural environment and by introducing collective institutions. Both alleviations are far from evident, however; this concerns their justification as well as their operationalization.

Workshop ‘Daten des Nationalen Bildungspanels, des FDZ der Statistischen Laendesaemter und des IAB’ (‘Data of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), data of the RDC of the Statistical Offices of the Laender, and of IAB’)

The workshop will give basic information on available micro data. The presentations at the workshop will describe available data, give empirical examples and will point out the research potentials of the data. Representatives of all presenting institutions will be available during the workshop, providing an excellent basis for discussions on the data, networking and socializing.

Both, experienced researcher and beginners in the field are addressed by this workshop.

The workshop language is German. The workshop will be held on 10-11.June 2013 in the Congress Centre of the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg.

ETH Zurich: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Social Network Analysis

The Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences at ETH Zurich (www.gess.ethz.ch) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship in Social Network Analysis. The position is part of the interdisciplinary Behavioral Studies Section and open to applications from all scientific disciplines.

The candidate should have an internationally recognized track record in Social Network Analysis and be able to build and sustain a strong research program. Furthermore, he or she should document an ability to teach effectively and be clearly committed to doing research in an interdisciplinary environment. The new professor will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses (in German or English) and graduate level courses (in English) within the scope of the required electives in the humanities and social sciences. Assistant professorships have been established to promote the careers of younger scientists. The initial appointment is for four years with the possibility of renewal for an additional two-year period and promotion to a permanent position.
