Call for Papers: 10th ESA Conference in Geneva – 7th – 10th September 2011

10th ESA CONFERENCE, GENEVA, 7th – 10th September 2011

SOCIAL RELATIONS IN TURBULENT TIMES

RN 17 – INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS, LABOUR MARKET INSTITUTIONS AND EMPLOYMENT

Call for papers
The consequences of the recent financial crash and the following economic crisis on organized labour, i.e. on industrial relations, employment and labour market institutions, is frequently seen as dramatic. However, industrial relations were always heavily exposed to financial and economic shocks and crises. For example, the shocks of the 1970s altered post-war labour relations radically, albeit with notable differences in pace and shape across countries. On the other hand, industrial relations and labour market institutions influenced the way in which this policy shift took place. The interrelationship between crises, turbulent times and industrial relations gives reason to discuss the implications of the crisis for the interaction of industrial relations with the economy and society. In line with the conference theme, RN 17 is interested in the following questions in context with the current crisis: will industrial relations undergo restructuring processes on a scale similar or even larger than the alterations of the past? To what extent will industrial relations and labour market institutions affect the policy responses and their effects?
In order to explore the theme of the conference as well as other current debates in the field of industrial relations, labour market institutions and employment, this call for papers intends to focus on the following areas:

  • Work and employment in (turbulent) times of the crisis
  • Labour markets: segmentation and social inequalities. The role of trade unions
  • Macro concertation in Europe in times of the crisis: welfare and collective bargaining
  • Restructuring and workplace labour relations: reorganisation processes and negotiations
  • The emergence of a European system of industrial relations: critical current debates
  • Perspectives for the European social model
  • New challenges to interest representation (RN17 and RC10)
  • The resurgence of conflicts: individual and collective forms of labour disputes

We expect to receive theoretical and empirical (both qualitative and quantitative) papers. Cross- national papers are especially welcome. Please submit your abstracts through the conference website (www.esa10thconference.com), using the online abstract submission form. The abstract submission platform opens on 10th January 2011 and the deadline for submissions is 25th February 2011. Papers for presentation will be selected by the RN coordinators on 6th April 2011. For further information and registration, please contact the conference secretariat (www.esa10thconference.com).

Stream number 7 is jointly organised by ISA RC10 and ESA RN17

Mirella Baglioni (ESA RN17 Coordinator) and Bernd Brandl (ESA RN17 Vice-coordinator)

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the International Journal of Human Resource Management

The Power of Ideas in Managing People

This special issue examines a neglected topic in HRM – the role of ideas. It will explore the significance of ideologies, identities, beliefs, values, norms and world views in shaping the management of work and the behaviour of workers and managers. The goal of the special issue is to demonstrate the explanatory power of ideas in human resource management studies.

A key assumption motivating the special issue is that rational and material conceptions of actor behaviour are incomplete at best. Material structures such as markets, national HR institutions, geographic landscapes and organizational structures all influence HR actors; however, these contexts do not determine actor behaviour. Actors have to interpret material contexts, different possibilities exist and actors chart a course of action based on their ideas and ideologies. The latter provide roadmaps that are particularly important in periods of economic uncertainty, such as that faced today.

Specific questions that the special issue will address include: How do systems of ideas shape HR management and practices? How are HR ideas and ideologies socially constructed at the workplace? How do ideas change and lead to changes in HR? How and to what extent do cross-national and cross-organizational differences in ideas and ideologies explain HRM variation? How significant are identities in shaping the experience and management of work? How do ideas and institutions, agency and structure interact? What is the role of normative beliefs and values in directing the study of HRM itself?

Themes

  • Management and union ideologies in HRM
  • Ideologies of work and capitalism
  • Subjectivity and language in HRM
  • Ideas and ideologies of performance and productivity in HRM
  • Identities and ethnicities at the workplace
  • Identity work: changing ideas and collective beliefs and their role in reshaping HRM
  • Analyzing employee well-being, preferences, attitudes or perceptions
  • The notion of the ‘ideal worker’ and of ideas of justice and fairness in shaping work
  • Gendered and feminist analysis of HRM
  • Different research tradition and ideologies in the study of HRM
  • Structure and agency: Combining material and ideational research in HRM

These themes should be seen as illustrative rather than exhaustive. However, in order to be considered for inclusion, articles should show how ideational factors shape HR management and practices. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed method approaches are welcome. Contributions to the special issue may be empirical, analytical or conceptual.

Review process
This call is open and competitive, and the submitted papers will be blind reviewed in the normal way. Submitted papers must be based on original material not under consideration by any other journal or outlet. The editors will select up to 10 papers to be included in the special issue, but other papers submitted may be considered for other issues of the journal.

Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted online using the International Journal of Human Resource Management ScholarOne Manuscripts site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rijh) by April 15th 2011. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non‐anonymous version as “Complete Document with author information”, and the anonymous version as “Main document without author information”.

To submit your manuscript to the Special Issue on ‘The Power of Ideas in Managing People’ choose the title of the Special Issue from the Manuscript Type list when you come to submit your paper. Also, when you come to the ‘Details and Comments’ page, answer ‘yes’ to the question ‘Is this manuscript a candidate for a special issue’ and insert the title in the text field provided.

The editors of the Special Issue are happy to discuss initial ideas for articles via e-mail.

Share: Three Full Time Positions

The ‘Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe’ (SHARE) offers three full time positions. SHARE is the largest social science panel study in Europe. It is the first study that combines extensive cross-national information on socio-economic status, health, and family relationships of Europe’s elder population. In three waves since 2004, information was collected on some 45,000 individuals aged 50 and older in 15 countries, including retrospective life histories. Currently, wave 4 is starting in 20 countries. In SHARE Germany about 6000 respondents will be interviewed starting January 2011, with innovative approaches to health measurement and minimization of non-response.

SOEPnewsletter No. 91/2011

Dear Colleagues:

The new SOEPnewsletter No. 91/2011 is available now!

Please see: http://www.diw.de/en/diw_01.c.365578.de

We have good news: The main SOEP sample will be increased to about 3,000 households in 2011. Our fieldwork organization TNS Infratest Sozialforschung of the last 26 years will continue to work with us, they won the Europe-wide tender for a ten-year contract. The SOEP has been given greater autonomy: it is no longer a regular department but a “research infrastructure” in DIW Berlin. We are steadily improving our survey methods, see for the next steps in this process the Comment from Martin Kroh in the new SOEPnewsletter. Furthermore, we provide information about SOEP 1984–2009 data, data news from Cornell, PanelWhiz, the upcomig SOEPcampus@DIW Berlin Workshop ‘Einfuehrung in die Nutzung von SOEP-Daten’ (registration starts Jan 10, 2011), a lot of personnel news, new papers, new users, and much more….
