Like social network analysis (SNA), qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) has gained popularity as a research strategy and a family of methods since Charles Ragin (1989, 2000, 2008) introduced QCA to the social sciences. Following a set-theoretic approach, QCA views cases as configurations of outcomes and conditions based on Boolean algebra. In contrast to studying net effects of independent variables as in regression analysis, QCA methods seek to identify necessary and/or sufficient combinations of conditions that lead to an outcome. QCA is well atuned to multiple conjunctural causation, which implies that first, a combination of conditions (rather than a single condition) produces an outcome (conjunctural causation), second, there may be more than one combination of conditions which account for an outcome (equifinality), and third, a (combination) of condition leading to the presence of an outcome might be quite different from a combinations of conditions leading to the absence of the outcome (causal asymmetry).

So far, only few studies have combined SNA and QCA. For example, social networks have been studied as a condition (e.g., Stevenson & Greenberg, 2000) or as an outcome (Magetti, 2009). QCA has also been used to create typologies of networks (e.g., Yamasaki & Spreitzer, 2006) and Raab, Provan and Lemaire (forthcoming) discuss the combination for inter-organizational networks. Those studies provide ample evidence that QCA is a powerful approach for studying social networks. Configurational network theories may deepen our understanding of social networks antecedents, processes and outcomes, and QCA provide the methodological tools to test these theories. In addition, QCA is very suitable in combining qualitative and quantitative data to explain outcomes on the node, dyad or network level of analysis.

We invite abstracts for 20 minute oral presentations on social network studies that follow a configurational approach and/or apply set-theoretic methods, such as crisp-set QCA, multi-value QCA , fuzzy-set QCA from all social science disciplines.

Some of the questions to address include, but are not limited to, the following:

Which combinations of conditions lead to specific outcomes? (e.g., what are necessary and sufficient conditions for occupying a central position in a network, what network characteristics are necessary and sufficient for high or low network effectiveness?)
Are certain network attributes (alone or in combination with other conditions) sufficient to explain a specific outcome (e.g., under which conditions are weak ties sufficient for receiving advice?)
Do actors occupying different network positions require different conditions to achieve a certain outcome? (e.g., do central or peripheral actors require different strategies or resources to perform well?

Description:
The incumbent will conduct research related to challenges arising from analyzing large-scale social networks. This will include optimizing existing and developing new centrality and grouping algorithms for big data. In the context of dynamic network data and streaming data, change detection algorithms will be developed. The incumbent will work in existing research projects with the Research faculty member supervisor in the above mentioned areas; the work will focus on doing research and writing papers on the results. We are looking for someone who can start on or around February 1, 2013.

Qualifications:
Education: PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or with a strong emphasis on Social Network Analysis. Experience: Experience in handling large data sets and in writing scientific articles. Strong background in Network Analysis and its methods and algorithms.

Skills: Excellent verbal communication and good written skills. Physical Mobility: normal sedentary, but travel across campus, across town, and out of town may be required.

Mental: excellent analytical problem solving and organizational skills;
ability to comprehend system and application related materials; able to understand and follow directions; ability to work under pressure; pay attention to detail; meet flexible deadlines.

2nd DwB Training Course
Working with data from official statistics in Europe – EU-SILC
13-15 February 2013, Romania

Data without Boundaries (DwB) organizes in cooperation with Eurostat a series of three day training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets.

This second course is particularly focused on the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) and will be hosted by the Romanian Social Data Archive at the Department of Sociology (University of Bucharest, Romania). Other partners involved in this course are GESIS (Mannheim, Germany), UK Data Archive (Essex), Réseau Quetelet (Paris), Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Paris) and Eurostat (Luxembourg).

The course is aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are seeking to conduct research on the basis of the EU-SILC. Besides highlighting the legal and administrative aspects of data access the course demonstrates the possibilities of the EU-SILC in a hands-on computer sessions which explores the potential for both international as well as longitudinal analysis by using multivariate statistical methods and SPSS/Stata.

Mit den Critical Management Studies (CMS) hat sich in den letzten 15 Jahren ein Begriff und ein Label etabliert, unter welchem die in einem weiten Sinne kritische Reflexion vorherrschender Vorstellungen von Management und Organisation und den damit verknüpften Wissens- und Praxisformen einen neuen Aufschwung genommen hat. Der Workshop verfolgt das Ziel, die Diskussion der CMS im deutschsprachigen Raum zu befördern. Von Interesse sind dabei Beiträge, welche sich in programmatischer oder konzeptioneller Hinsicht mit den CMS auseinandersetzen sowie empirische Studien, welche auf die CMS Bezug oder deren Grundlinien folgen. Erweiterte Abstracts (1.500-2.000 Wörter) können bis zum 31. März 2013 eingereicht werden.

Nachdem die Fahrleistungen von in Deutschland zugelassenen Kraftfahrzeugen nach der Jahrtausendwende zunächst kaum noch zunahmen, stiegen sie im Zuge der wirtschaftlichen Belebung nach 2009 sowohl bei Nutzfahrzeugen als auch bei Personenkraftwagen deutlich. Insgesamt lagen die Fahrleistungen der Kraftfahrzeuge im Jahr 2011 höher als je zuvor. Trotz effizienterer Antriebstechnik stagnierte der Kraftstoffverbrauch daher in den letzten Jahren, obwohl die langfristige Tendenz rückläufig ist. Mit einem Anteil von 85 Prozent an den Fahrleistungen bestimmen die Pkw das Bild auf den Straßen. Vor allem private Haushalte fragten Fahrleistungen nach, darunter zunehmend Frauen und ältere Menschen: Mit der zunehmenden Bildungs- und Erwerbsbeteiligung der Frauen stiegen ihr Autobesitz und die Verkehrsleistung. Gleichzeitig behalten Männer und Frauen einen mobileren Lebensstil mit dem Auto im Alter bei. Hingegen ist vor allem bei den Jüngeren eher eine geringere Autonutzung festzustellen. Sie wählen öfter als früher das jeweils am besten geeignete Verkehrsmittel statt ausschließlich mit dem eigenen Pkw zu fahren.

Mindestlohn im Bauhauptgewerbe : Beschäftigungseffekte nicht nachweisbar

Die Debatte um einen allgemeinen gesetzlichen Mindestlohn in Deutschland hält an. Mittlerweile sind die branchenbezogenen Mindestlöhne umfassend evaluiert worden. In diesem Beitrag werden die empirischen Untersuchungen zu den Lohn- und Beschäftigungswirkungen des Mindestlohnes im deutschen Bauhauptgewerbe diskutiert. Insgesamt konnten kaum Beschäftigungseffekte nachgewiesen werden. Schwierigkeiten bei Evaluationsstudien bereiten die Datenlage sowie die generelle Beschäftigungsentwicklung der Branche; seit Mitte der 90er Jahre ist die Zahl der Arbeitsplätze im Bauhauptgewerbe um die Hälfte zurückgegangen. Aus den bisher vorliegenden Ergebnissen von Evaluationen branchenspezifischer Mindestlöhne lassen sich keine zuverlässigen Einschätzungen über die Beschäftigungswirkungen eines allgemeinen Mindestlohns ableiten.

für Lehraufgaben (16 LVS), Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, mit 39 Stunden wöchentlich unbefristet zu besetzen. Die Stelle ist teilzeitgeeignet.

Die Universität strebt die Erhöhung des Anteils von Frauen am wissenschaftlichen Personal an und fordert deshalb qualifizierte Frauen nachdrücklich auf, sich zu bewerben. Frauen werden im Sinne des Hamburgischen Gleichstellungsgesetzes bei gleichwertiger Qualifikation vorrangig berücksichtigt.

Aufgaben:
Zu den Dienstaufgaben gehören ausschließlich wissenschaftliche Dienstleistungen in der Lehre, die selbständig oder unter der Verantwortung einer Hochschullehrerin / eines Hochschullehrers zu erfüllen sind. Die Lehrverpflichtung beträgt 16 Lehrveranstaltungsstunden. Das Dekanat kann die Lehrverpflichtung auf der Grundlage der Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung für die Hamburger Hochschulen (LVVO) in der jeweils geltenden Fassung neu festlegen.

Aufgabengebiet:
Der Fachbereich VWL legt großen Wert auf die methodisch-quantitative Ausbildung in den volkswirtschaftlichen Studiengängen und hat zu diesem Zweck eine Professur in Methoden der Volkswirtschaftslehre eingerichtet. Die Inhaberin bzw. der Inhaber der ausgeschriebenen Stelle einer wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin/eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiters übernimmt Lehraufgaben im Bereich der Mathematikausbildung für Volkswirte sowie darüber hinaus in Grundlagenveranstaltungen und im Bereich der mathematischen Wirtschaftstheorie in den volkswirtschaftlichen Studiengängen.

Einstellungsvoraussetzungen:
Abschluss eines den Aufgaben entsprechenden Hochschulstudiums und Promotion in Mathematik, Volkswirtschaftslehre oder in einem verwandten Fach.

The Sunbelt XXXIII. program committee is soliciting abstracts for paper and poster presentations at the upcoming 2013 conference in Hamburg, Germany.

Submission closes on December 31 at 11:59:59 EST. We invite abstract submissions for posters (120 minute poster session) and paper presentations (20 minute talk) on topics relevant to social network analysis, including theory, methods, and applications of social network analysis. Please limit your abstracts to 250 words. If a series of papers are being submitted as a single panel or session, please indicate this in the “special note section” of the abstract submission website (see FAQ’s). Paper and poster presentations will begin on Wed May 22 and conclude on Sun May 26. Presenting authors of accepted submissions must be members of INSNA and must register for and present their work at the meeting. This stipulation applies to both oral and poster presentations. Each member may present only one paper at the conference.

Abstract submissions are due by 31 December 2012. No abstracts can be accepted after this date.
