Mapping and Investigating Covert Networks via Network Analysis and Text Mining
Applying network analysis to co-offender data and other types of covert networks can help to select strategic leads for further investigation and overcoming limitations with profiling. A key challenge with this approach is data collection since classic methods such as surveys, questionnaires and observations are often inapplicable. Alternatively, relevant information about covert networks can be contained in unstructured, natural language text data, such as communication data, material from court hearings, reports from subject matter experts, and data from the (participatory) web. In this talk, I present my work on methods, technologies and applications for constructing covert network data from various accounts of behavioral trace data, mainly text data, and for considering the content of information and communication data for network analysis. I provide examples from my research on the Sudan, where critical interactions include conflicts and coalitions between ethnic groups and rivalries over natural resources. I will also talk about my work on email data analysis of a corporation indicted of white- collar crime. Finally, I will touch on data privacy and security issues related to studying covert networks.

Data without Boundaries organizes in cooperation with Eurostat a series of three day training courses on integrated Eurostat datasets.
This first course will particularly focus on the European Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) and will be hosted by GESIS (Mannheim); other partners involved in this course are UK Data Archive (Essex), Réseau Quetelet (Paris), Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (Paris) and Eurostat (Luxembourg).
The course is aimed at post graduate and senior researchers from throughout Europe who are seeking to conduct research on the basis of the EU- LFS. Besides highlighting the legal and administrative aspects of data access the course will demonstrate the possibilities of the EU-LFS in a hands-on computer session which will explore the potential for both international as well as longitudinal analysis. A basic understanding of multivariate statistical methods and SPSS/Stata will be required.
The course will consist of the following three parts:
Part I: Overview of European Data from Official Statistics Part II: The EU-LFS: Content, documentation, data structure, analysis Part III: Accessing confidential national microdata

After the great success of the first two Young Scientists Conferences in Hamburg (in 2010) and in Bremen (in 2011), the “3rd Young Scientists Conference: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Global Change” this year will take place in Kiel on 1-2 October, 2012.
The annual meeting is jointly organized by early career scientists of the three marine and climate Clusters of Excellence of Kiel (Future Ocean), Bremen (MARUM), and Hamburg (CliSAP). PhD Students and Postdocs from the three Clusters and associated institutes are invited to participate and to submit an abstract to one of the scientific sessions focusing on climate, marine, and Earth System research, including nature-society interactions.

The IAB Graduate School’s 5th interdisciplinary Ph.D. workshop on Perspectives on (Un-)Employment endeavours to bring together young researchers from different disciplines. This international workshop will provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students to present and discuss their research in a constructive atmosphere, incorporating feedback and advice from a number of experiences researchers. Internationalisierung der Unternehmensforschung : neue Standorte gewinnen an Bedeutung

Deutsche und ausländische Unternehmen haben ihre Forschungsund Entwicklungsinvestitionen in Deutschland in den letzten Jahren beständig gesteigert. Mit gut 45 Milliarden Euro lagen die Aufwendungen im Jahr 2009 um ein Drittel über dem Niveau von 2001. Während die ausländischen Unternehmen ihre Forschungsund Entwicklungsaktivitäten in Deutschland deutlich ausgeweitet haben, stagnierten die Aufwendungen deutscher Unternehmen im Ausland. Insgesamt ergibt sich für Deutschland ein positiver Saldo von vier Milliarden Euro. Es gibt keine Hinweise darauf, dass Forschung und Entwicklung in großem Umfang aus Deutschland ins Ausland verlagert werden. Die Auslandsforschung deutscher Unternehmen findet immer noch überwiegend in den USA und in den europäischen Nachbarländern statt, zunehmend aber auch in einigen mittel- und osteuropäischen Ländern sowie in China und Südostasien. An den neuen Forschungsstandorten entsteht inzwischen etwa jede zehnte Auslandserfindung deutscher Unternehmen. Allerdings sind die deutschen Unternehmen an den neuen Forschungsstandorten keineswegs aktiver als ihre Wettbewerber.
